NOAA's emerging conduit for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for mission science initiatives
We're exploring the needs and capabilities of the NOAA community. We want to spark conversations, provide space for networking, and encourage information sharing about AI/ML within NOAA and its scientific communities. We welcome your participation in the evolution of NCAI and the development of our Community of Practice.
News and events
A big ocean needs big data, so that's why we created FathomNet: an open-source labeled image database and machine learning model repository that aims to advance ocean research. Since last year’s workshop, we have released new features, added new image collections, and more. Join us to learn how you can leverage FathomNet for your research needs. Two virtual sessions will facilitate a range of time zones, so please register for the most convenient time slot.
The 13th International Conference on Climate Informatics will be held at BMA House, London, UK between 22–24 April 2024. This year's conference is supported by the Alan Turing Institute Environment and Sustainability Grand Challenge. This annual international conference series brings together researchers from climate science, computer science, and data science to stimulate discussion of new ideas, foster new collaborations, grow the community, and accelerate discovery across disciplinary boundaries.
Big Data for Environmental Resilience and Adaptation, Boulder, Colorado. Environmental Data Science Innovation and Inclusion Lab's (ESIIL) 2024 Innovation Summit will offer an opportunity to use big data to understand resilience across genes, species, ecosystems and societies, advance ecological forecasting with solutions in mind, and inform adaptive management and natural climate solutions. The Summit will support attendees to advance data-informed courses of action for resilience and adaptation in the face of our changing environment. It will be an in-person ‘unconference’, enabling participants to dynamically work on themes that most inspire them, with inclusive physical and intellectual spaces for working together.
The NOAA AI Workshop will discuss leveraging AI to align with NOAA’s strategic priorities. Participants will collaborate around themes and use cases that can be sustained after the workshop via online platforms. We invite scientists, AI practitioners, and application users to join this community-driven collaboration development event. The event is planned as hybrid pending resource availability, which will be announced in April with registration information.
AI at NOAA: Highlighting Innovation in Practice
Artificial intelligence (AI) can help scientists better understand the environment and its management. NOAA has a long history of using AI in weather forecasting, climate modeling, and environmental monitoring and has established the NOAA Center for Artificial Intelligence to support new and ongoing projects that span from the bottom of the ocean to the outer atmosphere. Learn how we use AI across NOAA in this ESRI StoryMap offsite link, or scroll through it below.
