Connect with NOAA Education at the American Geophysical Union 2017 Fall Meeting

Your handy guide to education posters, presentations, sessions, and more at AGU 2017.

From December 11th through 15th, Earth scientists from around the world will convene in New Orleans for the 2017 American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting. It's the single largest gathering of Earths science experts, which means there's a lot of content to navigate. Here's your road map for meeting up with NOAA educators, grant program managers, experts, and students at AGU 2017.

1. Stop by the NOAA booth.

Come visit us in booth 1025 in the exhibit hall. Our reach goes from the surface of the sun to the depths of the ocean floor. From daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings, and climate monitoring to fisheries management, coastal restoration and supporting marine commerce, NOAA’s products and services support economic vitality and affect more than one-third of America’s gross domestic product. We will be showcasing data visualization technology and networking with conference attendees throughout the meeting.

2. Support the next generation of diverse geoscientists.

NOAA's Diversity and Professional Advancement Working Group hosted a discussion on The STEM Gap: Millennials as Agents of Change at the the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill. Attendees included NOAA Educational Partnership with Minority-Serving Institutions undergraduate scholars, Sea Grant Knauss Marine Policy Fellows, and Capitol Hill Interns.

NOAA's Diversity and Advancement Working Group is convening as session on enhancing diversity and gender parity in the geosciences. This session addresses methods for broadening participation across underrepresented groups, reducing implicit bias, and the impacts of affinity/employee resource groups on increasing recruitment and retention.

3. Join the discussion on how education can support community resilience.

NOAA's National Weather Service urges communities in northern North Dakota to prepare for moderate to major flooding on the Souris River this spring. Last time the river flooded was in 2011 (as pictured here, near Minot.)

NOAA's Environmental Literacy Program will explore new approaches for how education and public engagement can support local government resilience or climate adaptation plans. Discussion will include lessons learned from adapting and using decision-support tools and data products in K-12 and informal education environments.

5. Learn about our scholarship and fellowship opportunities.

Alicia Juang, a junior at Harvard College, followed her interest in ecological restoration to Padilla Bay NERR in Mount Vernon, Washington. There, she spent her summer internship studying the variation in carbon stocks between natural and restored wetlands. In the fall, Alicia will embark on a senior thesis building off of her work at Padilla Bay, and after graduating, she hopes to work in water resources management or habitat restoration.

NOAA has been supporting students and fellows to train the next generation of NOAA scientists and experts. Participants can learn about opportunities while exploring the impacts and outcomes of these successful student training programs.
