The sea scallop - an inhabitant of waters off the Atlantic coast - is a striking example of genetic variation in nature. Though the shape of the shell isuniform, markings and color in this single species vary widely. Selectivebreeding for desirable traits (e.g., better flesh color or larger size) is oneof the goals of artificial cultivation.
