Figure 39. Massey sounder, a propeller driven sounding device first developedin 1802 by Edward Massey. Many improvements were made to this device throughthe Nineteenth Century. The instrument in the image was created by Thomas Walker in 1874. It consists of a propeller driven registering device which is fixedto a sounding line and weighted by ballast.
