Figure 23. The HIRONDELLE enclosed spring dynanometer. This type of shockabsorber employed a metallic spring instead of rubber, which was fragile andalterable. It was designed and built by Jules LeBlanc following the suggestionof Prince Albert I of Monaco. It was first used in 1888 on the HIRONDELLE andfor many subsequent years and scientific campaigns.
