Description
Track of the USS ENTERPRISE across the Indian Ocean. Note the 3097 fathomsounding southwest of Sumatra. That sounding is the first indication of the JavaTrench. A few years later, Sir John Murray named that area the Enterprise Deep, a name which has been superceded by Java Trench. (Image credit: NOAA Central Library Historical Collection)
