Accelerating R&D on Ocean-Based CDR to Slow the Ocean-Climate Crisis

2022 SOST Opportunities and Actions Roundtable Submissions

Summary: The crisis in our oceans and in our climate are two sides of the same coin, and the window to slow, halt and ultimately reverse both is rapidly closing. To accomplish this gargantuan task requires an array of new ocean knowledge and innovative new technologies. An effective ocean agenda must align with an expanded climate action agenda, with three key pillars: Reduce, Remove and Repair. While we have spent the last 40 year focusing on reducing carbon emissions, they have grown year on year. As a result, we must now add large scale removal of CO2 to the agenda. And to avoid the risk of catastrophic losses of marine ecosystems while we reduce heat and CO2 levels, we must begin to focus on the repair of key parts of the earth’s system that we cannot live well without, such as coral reefs and polar ice sheets. Transformative and co-designed ocean science will be essential to achieving all of this, and this bold and expanded agenda will require radically new innovations. We'll quickly present some of the those proposed approaches, work under a new Ocean Visions - UN Decade Collaborative Center for Ocean-
Climate Solutions, and some of the emerging innovations in the space, and the need for large scale Federal involvement in moving this nascent field forward.
