2022 SOST Opportunities and Actions Roundtable
Summary: Chugach Regional Resources Commission (CRRC) represents a consortium of seven Tribes in southcentral Alaska. CRRC operates the Alutiiq Pride Marine Institute and engages in numerous facets of climate resilience work that are Tribally led and guided by elders and citizen scientists of the consortium villages. CRRC manages several major programs that have potential to serve as models for climate work that engages and employs Tribal citizen scientists, providing diversity, equity, and inclusion of Indigenous peoples in ocean science and technology. These programs encompass several major topics, including subsistence species stock enhancement, , Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) surveys and national database contribution, marine research and monitoring, economic development through mariculture (shellfish and kelp) and engagement with public processes for the management of fish and game resources. CRRC’s programs are a template for Indigenous-led ocean science initiatives to provide key solutions to fill gaps in federally funded ocean science and technology programs.
