Raft-culture of oysters, used widely in Japan, is under study by Woods HoleLaboratory. The biologist is holding a string of bay scallop shells used tocollect oyster spat. The string of shells will then be hung beneath a raftwhere the spat will grow to adult, commercial-size oysters.
