Figure 30. Nansen releasing devices used for closing plankton nets. This device was invented by Fridthof Nansen about 1900 and apparently used aboard theMICHAEL SARS. A messenger activated this mechanism which in turn strangledthe net by closing off its open end and capturing the fauna in the net.
