Alexander Supan was among the first to recognize the nature of oceanic trenches. Compare his nomenclature for the Aleutian Trench to John Murray's 1899 map.Perhaps Supan Deep as shown by Murray was a little jab as Murray continued thissort of terminology until his untimely death in 1914.
