Alexander Dallas Bache, Second and arguably greatest of the Superintendents ofthe Coast Survey. He expanded the operations of the Survey to cover the wholeU.S. coastline, began geophysical operations in the Coast Survey, was a founderand first president of the National Academy of Sciences, and made the CoastSurvey a strong arm of Union mapping and intelligence during the Civil War.
