Deck officer Raymond H. Carstens, USC&GS; (1909-1997). Although Carstens hadto resign from the commissioned service of C&GS; for health reasons, he stayedon as a civilian and became one of its most authoritative hydrographic experts.His career spanned 48 years, from 1931 until 1979.
