Figure 21. Model of Hodge's shock absorber or accumulator. This device wasinvented in 1852 by Richard Edward Hodges. It was used to aid in launching andretrieving heavy objects suspended from cables or ropes, particularly when avessel is subject to motion if the seas are high. It was first used inoceanographic work off H. M. S. HYDRA in 1867.
