Sometimes, like in basketball, a fisherman’s life is nothing but net.
But a new kind of net is allowing West Coast groundfishermen to catch more of what they want while avoiding sensitive stocks and other species.
NOAA’s top official, Administrator Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, checked out the innovative nets during a visit to the Foulweather Trawl net shop in Oregon today. Sullivan noted that the nets represent collaboration set up through the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act in the best sense of the word — applying expertise of science, business and fishermen in the name of resilience and sustainability.
