Wisconsin Point Dune Restoration

The Wisconsin Point Dune Restoration project was specifically listed as a priority in the St. Louis River Area of Concern 2013 Remedial Action Plan update as an “Action Still Needed to Achieve Removal” of BUI 9: Loss of Fish and Wildlife Habitat. Completion of this project is contributing to rehabilitation of hydrologically connected habitats and treatment of invasive species. Funding received by NOAA in Fiscal Year 2015 was to complete a new project design and to conduct the necessary environmental compliance reviews. An archaeological survey of Wisconsin Point by local partners noted the presence of historical and tribal artifacts near this proposed project area, thus prompting the creation of a new project design.

Project achievements:

  • 14,000 sq. ft. forested area restored
  • 6,500 sq. ft. dunes restored
  • 1,000 ft. linear shoreline restored
  • Shoreline stabilization around Allouez Bay
  • Improved accessibility with installation of ADA compliant boardwalk

Funding
FY 2016: $1,400,000
FY 2015: $225,000
