METEOR (Mobile ocEan roboTic obsErvatiOn System)

Summary: METEOR is a revolutionary system-of-systems to observe the changing ocean in near real-time, in ways that have never (and could not have) been done before:

• Portable robotic vehicles equipped with a range of sensors will enable observation of essential ocean variables with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution made possible by new sensing devices and onboard cooperative networked intelligence.
• Communication networks to enable transfer of sensed data to the cloud, and interactions with automated control centers for 24/7 operations, optimized for minimal human intervention.
• Resulting digital representations of relevant ocean processes based on ocean models refined with the continuous assimilation of in-situ data provided by robotic vehicles and satellite remote sensing data.

METEOR will change how operational oceanography is done and will allow access to a digital ocean to a range of stakeholders from an expert scientist to a subsistence-based fishers.
