1. THIS TRANSMITS:

Revocation Notice for NOAA Administrative Order (NAO) 212-12A, Telecommunications Standards: NOAA Interoperability Profile, dated July 16, 1993.

2. PURPOSE:

This Revocation Notice revokes NAO 212-12B, Telecommunications Standards: Names, Addressees, and Gateways in Electronic Mail Systems. This NAO was created during the OMB mandated conversion of Government Email systems to the GOSIP (Government Open System Interconnection Protocol) standard. Over the course of several years and implementation of the Internet, industry standards solidified, obviating the need for the GOSIP standard. The subsequent reduction of the market to dominance of a few email standards greatly reduced the need for gateways and translators.

No conversion was required for NOAA, and DOC has since taken over the role of mandating enterprise-wide email standards and naming conventions. Therefore NAO 212-12B is no longer relevant.
