Supporting Great Lakes Clean Marina Certification Efforts

Michigan Sea Grant (MSG), as coordinator of the Great Lakes Clean Marina Network offsite link, will facilitate outreach and education for marina and harbor operators leading to the implementation of on-the-ground Clean Marina certification efforts in the Great Lakes region. As participants in the Clean Marina Program, marinas voluntarily pledge to maintain and improve waterways by reducing or eliminating releases of harmful substances and phasing out practices that can damage aquatic environments.

Specific project activities include administration of a regional mini-grants competition to support Great Lakes Clean Marina programs, participant recruitment, and promotion of the Clean Marina Classroom offsite link training curriculum through enhanced partnerships. The effort will ultimately facilitate implementation of best management practices (BMPs) at participating marinas to promote water quality protection. The 2016 funding competition is open to Clean Marina program coordinators, Sea Grant offices, industry groups, and other entities responsible for administration of a Clean Marina Program in any Great Lakes state (NY, PA, OH, MI, IN, IL, WI, MN). Attaining certification is a critical component of the Clean Marina Program and provides the framework for marina operators to implement best management practices for water quality which benefit nearshore restoration strategies.
