The fellowship program creates seven two-year positions at institutions in coral reef states and territories. Each position has its own distinct work plan, responding to specific needs for increased coral reef management capacity in each coral reef jurisdiction and provides training and professional development opportunities. Fellows will work on issues affecting U.S. coral reef ecosystems including climate change, land-based sources of pollution and fishing.

Citizen science is a term that describes projects in which volunteers partner with scientists to answer real-world questions. These volunteers can work with scientists to identify research questions, collect and analyze data, interpret results, make new discoveries, develop technologies and applications, as well as solve complex problems.

As a volunteer intern, you will work on a variety of projects tailored to meet your capacity, availability and interests. We are based in Silver Spring, Maryland and easily accessible on Washington DC's metro system. As a volunteer in our offices, you'll be encouraged to attend marine conservation events, lectures, conferences and receptions that provide fantastic networking opportunities for your career development.

The National Weather Service (NWS) National School Outreach team is ready to teach and answer your students' weather questions. Whether it is learning about weather basics, severe weather, the sun or space weather, or any other topic the teacher needs covered, the NWS, through Google Meet, Zoom, or Skype, jumps into the classroom to help teach these topics to elementary through high school students.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Internship Program (GRIP) provides NSF graduate fellows and graduate students supported by grants funded by NSF's Geosciences Directorate with internship opportunities at federal facilities. Here at NOAA, GRIP interns can grow professionally and build their network with a rewarding research experience. Applications are due in December and May each year.

Eligibility: Recipients of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) U.S. graduate students supported on active research grants funded by NSF's Directorate for Geosciences.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and WHOI Sea Grant (WHOI SG) are excited to collaborate with Sea Education Association on the Ocean STEAM Powered Women (O-STEAM) Fellowship, a competitive, week-long, FREE, residential fellowship in Woods Hole for a cohort of young women from Massachusetts currently in their sophomore or junior year of high school.

During their week, fellows work with WHOI and WHOI SG staff to investigate marine mammal bioacoustics (sounds) while also meeting other female science, technology, engineering, arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) professionals and learning from their collective expertise. The immersive experience includes building and testing their own underwater microphone (or hydrophone), analyzing data of dolphin vocalizations to aid in conservation efforts, and capturing the underwater sounds of whales and dolphins vocalizing during a whale watch expedition. Fellows will learn from communications specialists about how to share their research and experiences with their community.

We are committed to assembling diverse groups of fellows. This fellowship encourages applicants from groups historically underrepresented in the ocean sciences – especially with respect to gender identity/expression, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. We welcome students who are interested in being in a female-identified space. 

The PIFSC Young Scientist Opportunity (PYSO) is a collaborative program between PIFSC and the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa. This program offers qualified participants a paid summer internship (8–12 weeks) that combines on-the-job training, mentoring, and scientific research experience. Must reside in Hawaiʻi.
