As the current and former leaders of NOAA, we note with deepest sympathies for his family, the passing of Dr. John V. Byrne offsite link. John was known and respected by us all, not just for his leadership at NOAA, but for his vast and significant contributions to ocean science and the important partnership between academia and government.

Appointed by President Reagan to serve as the third NOAA Administrator, Dr. Byrne was the first ocean scientist to lead the agency. In his three-year term, he led NOAA through difficult budgetary times and a major reorganization, reinvigorating the agency's oceanographic role, improving employee morale and saving the National Sea Grant College program. Internationally, he led an effort to improve whale protection.

John V. Byrne was Oregon State University’s 12th president from 1984 to 1995 after serving as NOAA Administrator from 1981-1984.

Dr. Byrne was a brilliant scientist, compelling leader, and wonderful human being. He had a passion for the ocean and a lasting impact on the oceanographic community. His service throughout his career, as exemplified by his leadership of the Kellogg Commission on the Future of State Land Grant Universities, will benefit generations to come. Whether conducting research, leading universities and large agencies or enjoying his hobbies, Dr. John V. Byrne will long be remembered by so many, including our NOAA family.

Sincerely,
