NOAA announces the EPP/MSI 2023 Graduate Fellowship Program recipient

NOAA Office of Education has selected one recipient, Jahnelle Howe, for the José E. Serrano Educational Partnership Program with Minority Serving Institutions (EPP/MSI) Graduate Fellowship Program, class of 2023.

The EPP/MSI Graduate Fellowship Program is designed to prepare recipients for the NOAA workforce by providing a one-year experience at a NOAA facility. Applicants must be currently supported at EPP/MSI Cooperative Science Centers and pursuing graduate degrees in disciplines that are aligned with the NOAA mission.

Jahnelle will conduct collaborative research at a NOAA facility under the guidance of a NOAA mentor and her academic advisor. She will also participate in professional development training. Through this experience, Jahnelle will become familiar with NOAA’s mission of science, service, and stewardship and build her professional network at NOAA.

"We welcome Jahnelle to the EPP/MSI Graduate Fellowship Program and the NOAA community. We look forward to the results of Jahnelle’s research supporting coastal ecosystem conservation and management efforts," said Louisa Koch, Director of Education.

What do you expect to accomplish during your tenure as an EPP/MSI Graduate Fellow?

During my tenure as an EPP/MSI Graduate fellow I expect to accomplish the following: The first being completing a chapter of my thesis dissertation to enable me to graduate on schedule. Another accomplishment will be to contribute to the Northeast Fisheries establishment of a protocol for assessing ecosystem health and blue carbon sequestration and storage in coastal ecosystems. This opportunity will also provide me with additional skills and competencies needed to become a marine biologist at NOAA. I look forward to working with my mentor Dr. Ashok Depshande and the Sandy Hook team to develop technical skills and broaden my network with NOAA scientists and collaborators.
